If getting covered over the years by artists of many genres is an indicator, then one would have to argue that REO's Speedwagon power ballad "Keep On Loving You" deserves a conversation. Penned by Kevin Cronin about staying in a relationship despite unfaithfulness, it was the first REO Speedwagon single to break the top 50 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, reaching the number-one spot for one week in March of 1981. It's got dark verses, yes. Those soaring choruses though, with all puns intended, keep the love. And oh how it has been loved...and covered. There have been renditions by Lisa Loeb & Dweezil Zappa, The Donnas, and as told by Kevin this week on the latest Totally 80's podcast episode you can add Keith Urban, Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols and Dolly Parton to the list.

This song is specifically about Kevin Cronin's woman at the time he wrote it. I know there is a video out there that suggests different but in an interview he has said this song was specifically about her and was the inspiration for the song. She was cheating on him while he was away but he decides in the end that he doesn't want the relationship to end so he is going to keep on loving her. It's actually that simple. There is a YouTube video where they sing this song on the midnight special back in 1980. If you look at Kevin's facial expressions when singing it, especially early on in the song, you almost get the feeling he is singing it to her. It was in 1980 when the song was written so its possible. 041b061a72
